Theatrical Marketplace Recovery for Independent Films

Audiences will go back to theaters and the theatrical market will recover – for independent films it’s just taking a little longer. So, what types of independent films will have the ability to attract theatrical buyers and drive audiences to cinemas? Experts give their views on what future exhibition demand and opportunities for independent films will be.

    Jeffrey Greenstein joined Millennium Media in 2010, handling more than sixty films during his tenure at the company, including The Expendables franchise, Olympus Has Fallen, London Has Fallen, and Angel Has Fallen, The Hitman’s Bodyguard, Mechanic: Resurrection and Jolt with Kate Beckinsale and Stanley Tucci.

    Greenstein has risen through the proverbial ranks of Millennium’s corporate ladder with lightning speed. Named President of International Sales & Distribution at Nu Image/Millennium Films in April 2015, Greenstein oversaw the sales and distribution of all Millennium productions. In 2016, Greenstein became President of Millennium Media. In this role, he manages all aspects of the independent studio. He is also a member of the PGA.

    Millennium Media recently wrapped productions include the highly anticipated comic book adaptation, Red Sonja starring Matilda Lutz, Wallis Day, and Robert Sheehan, Subservience starring Megan Fox and Dirty Angels with Eva Green, Ruby Rose, and Maria Bakalova. Recent releases include the 4th installment of The Expendables franchise, The Offering with Paul Kaye, Till Death with Megan Fox, and The Enforcer with Antonio Banderas, Kate Bosworth, 2 Chainz.

    Millennium Media’s upcoming releases include The Bricklayer with Aaron Eckhart and Nina Dobrev, and The Piper with Charlotte Hope and Julian Sands.

    Howard Cohen is the Co-President and Co-Founder of Roadside Attractions, which devises innovative theatrical release strategies for outstanding specialty films. Roadside has released over 150 films in its 19 year history, with combined box office exceeding $500 million. Their films have garnered numerous Oscar® and other award nominations and wins. Roadside is partially owned by Lionsgate, who distributes Roadside films in aftermarkets such as VOD and television. Roadside recently announced a 3 year deal with Hulu for the post-theatrical streaming window on its theatrical releases.

    Roadside’s recent releases include Call Jane starring Elizabeth Banks, Kate Mara, and Sigourney Weaver, The Good House starring Sigourney Weaver and Kevin Kline, and Emily the Criminal starring Aubrey Plaza. Upcoming releases including Sundance documentary To The End and Tribeca hit from Ray Romano, Somewhere in Queens. Notable releases in recent years include Benediction from director Terence Davies, The Courier, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Matteo Garrone’s double Academy Award® nominated Pinocchio, Academy Award® winner Judy, and the number one independent film of summer 2019: The Peanut Butter Falcon. Also in recent times were the highest-grossing independent film of 2018, I Can Only Imagine, the Spirit Award-nominated Beatriz At Dinner, and double Academy Award® winner Manchester by the Sea. Past releases include Hello My Name Is Doris, Love & Friendship, Dear White People, Mr. Holmes, Love & Mercy, A Most Wanted Man, The Cove, Margin Call, Winter’s Bone, Arbitrage, Mud, and All Is Lost.

    Before running the show with Eric d’Arbeloff at Roadside Attractions, Cohen was also an Executive Producer on Mira Nair’s film Vanity Fair and was head of the Independent Film Department at United Talent Agency. Cohen’s early career included executive positions at HBO, Paramount, and TNT.

    Cohen is a voting member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences(AMPAS), in the Executive Branch.

    Cohen has a B.A. from Harvard College.
